I loved a boy once

In the days of toil
He used to smile
And put fire
In my candle wax

I used to wonder why
He had such pretty eyes
Somewhere in between grey
Brown and hazel too.

And then I lost a boy
When he became a man
The grey in his eyes
Turmed green
And the spicy reds
In his ruffled hair
darkened another shade
Of Brown

I could not see
The freckles
Oddly fascinating
Had disappeared under the table
On the other side
And his smile
And teasing jokes
Melted into seriousness

And each time
I looked at his face
He seemed to be
A strange man
With features
I no longer understood

So once I loved
And now I lost
My pretty boy
To the world of men.
